Guna milan calculator

Match by name (naam se gun milan), by nakshatra and rashi, or by rashi only. Ashtakoota score out of 36.

Type the boy's and girl's names (the kundli name or pukar naam). We find the nakshatra and rashi from the first letter.

For information only. This simplified calculator follows the common North Indian ashtakoota method; your pandit may use detailed tables and exceptions.

The 8 kootas

Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) add up to 36 gunas. Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight, which is why families pay special attention to them.

Questions

How many gunas should match?

Traditionally 18 or more out of 36 is considered acceptable, 24 to 32 good, and above 32 excellent. Families also look at Nadi and Bhakoot dosha and at the full kundli.

How does name-based guna milan work?

Each nakshatra has four starting letters (the avakahada chakra). The first letter of the name used for the kundli tells us the nakshatra and rashi. If the first letter isn't clear in English, type the name in Hindi or pick the nakshatra yourself.

Where do I find my nakshatra and rashi?

They are written in your janam kundli or patrika. If you only know your date, time and place of birth, a pandit or any kundli app can tell you.

Is this the final word on a match?

No. This is a quick, traditional score for information. Compatibility depends on much more: values, families and how you get along. Please talk to your family pandit for a full reading.
